March MATness

March 4, 2019 by JoAnna

I either hear “MAT Pilates is easy, I want to take a Reformer class”  or “MAT Pilates is too hard for me!” We obviously need to clarify what MAT Pilates is all about!

Pilates as a whole is never too easy or too hard if you are connecting your mind, body and breathe together to do the movement. Yes, there may be some movements that are easier for you and harder for others depending on what’s going on with your body. Remember that the reformer, tower, chair and other apparatus are amazing and fancy pieces of equipment that provide you with resistance but they also assist you in a lot of areas. Give your body a different challenge without the assistance of the straps or springs!

MAT Pilates requires only one thing, yourself! It is great because you can take home what you learn in class without needing any of the fancy equipment. A lot of the MAT work exercises are original Joseph Pilates moves, the founder of Contrology or better known as Pilates! Joseph Pilates was a pioneer in his time. He believed that mental and physical health are interconnected and that eating healthy and getting sufficient sleep were essential for overall health. It feels kinda’ nice kickin’ it old school with JP! Some of those more classical Pilates exercises require you to work hard to stabilize your core, lengthen those muscles and control your pelvis. Oh yes, and don’t forget to breathe!

You will be in for an exercise routine that tones, strengthens, boosts mental health, improves posture, increases flexibility and focuses on your powerhouse – you know those really important muscles like your abs, pelvic floor musculature, hips and glutes. Remember, a strong core helps ward off back pain and makes daily chores more doable. A strong core is a must and not just for athletes!  For parents picking up their kids, runners, golfers and those who sit at a desk or in their car for long periods of time. When your core is strong, it serves as the center of power so your limbs don’t have to bear as much of the brunt of movement. Studies show that Pilates is effective in reducing pain and improving function in people with back pain. How amazing is Pilates?! We can tell you stories of how Pilates saved numerous people from having to have back surgery.

Don’t be intimidated by the classical MAT Pilates repertoire, At Firehaus Pilates we may switch it up and start with a different warm up then “the hundred” and end with some nice fluid, feel good movement that relax the nervous system. We will always keep the movements appropriate for your body and skill level while still providing you with a challenging workout. Thanks to the balance, focus and strength work in Pilates, you will always leave the MAT feeling strong, energized and de-stressed. Amen to that!

So, if you have you been layin’ all comfy on the Reformer, get yourself into a MAT class and see where that body weight work is at! It takes a lot of control and strength but remember that Pilates of any type is for Every-BODY. Just as we modify movements on the reformer or tower, we also modify on the MAT! I challenge you to take 1 MAT class per week for 1 month and feel the difference in your body, mind and bootay!

We offer a MAT Class every Wednesday night at 7pm – For March MATness we are offering a 4 Pack of MAT Classes for $50.00. We encourage you to use them consecutively!

Home Work!  Please feel free to take this exercise home with you along with anything else you learn in our classes!

The most commonly known Pilates MAT exercises is The Hundred:

Start lying on your back.

  • Bend your knees so the feet are flat on the floor. Place your arms straight beside your torso with  palms facing down.
  • Take a breath in and on the exhale draw your navel into your spine (narrowing your waist as if you were wearing a corset). Then slowly bring your legs up to a tabletop position (lift one leg at a time keeping your abdominals engaged, the knees will be bent at a 90-degree angle and form a 90 degrees angle with your hip joint).
  • Reaching with your arms, nod your chin and curl your torso to bring your head and neck off the floor. Beginning pumping your arms at your sides. Inhale for 5 beats, Exhale for 5 beats. Repeat this 10 times.
  • To advance the exercise – extend your legs to a straight leg position.

Special considerations:

  • Neck pain – Don’t work through it! You can perform all or part of the repetitions with the head on the MAT.
  • Back pain – This is an indication that there is too much load on your abdominals (i.e. they aren’t strong enough yet). Make the position smaller: If your legs are straight, put them in tabletop; If your legs are in tabletop, place the feet on the floor.

Studio to the Office: What Are You Wearing and Why?

May 6, 2015 by JoAnna

athleisure-01

You know the look, you’re probably wearing it right now: leggings, sports bra,
breathable tee and quilted vest? What has been uniform to the Pilates gal and more
over, the Colorado woman, is becoming more popular nationwide. So what do we
call it? Activewear? Athleticwear? Sportswear? Does anyone else think we need a
better word for the gym-to-street sector that has suddenly become the hottest thing
to cover two legs? The latest word for this new trend in fashion is “athleisure,” a
broad category of being appropriate for either athletic or leisure pursuits, or both.

Looking at the number of companies that have since announced they are getting
into the game, with clothes that are described as “après sport” or “studio-to-the office,”
it’s fairly clear that athleisure is becoming bigger than a trend.

The U.S. active-wear market hit $35.1 billion in sales in the 12 months ending in
October 2014, an 8% increase over 2013, The NPD Group, a market-research
company, reports. Workout clothing now represents 17% of the total clothing market,
NPD said. Sales of tailored pants and jeans have declined, NPD analyst Marshal
Cohen said.

Lululemon, a public company since 2007,dominates the athleisure market with its
289 stores. The company’s net revenue increased $124.5 million, or 12%, to $1.2 million
for the first three quarters of fiscal 2014 from $1.1 million in the same time period last
year.

Gap’s active brand Athleta, another early entrant into the athleisure market, also
leads the field. In the last three quarters, the number of Athleta stores has grown by
28 to 92 while the company’s core businesses — Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic
— are stable.

Luxury versions of leisure clothes have occupied a niche of fashion for decades
(Juicy Couture’s velour tracksuits were far ahead of this curve), and, of course, a
good deal of these clothes are really no different from the Ts and sweats people
have been buying for years, now just with better tailoring and excellent marketing
behind them.

Despite the marketing appeal and catchy taglines, athleisure represents a bigger,
and likely permanent, sea change in fashion. It has even started to appear on
designer runways, including those famous couture sneakers from Chanel. The
reasons are many, but the most obvious cause stems from people who are
embracing healthier lifestyles, while also demanding more functionality from their
wardrobes. The need for everyday comfort, too, plays a role, especially for anyone
trying to work fitness into an already overtaxed schedule. Who wants to haul an
extra outfit to work?

So what is your take? Do you participate in the trend? Is athleisure here to stay?

The History of Pilates and Its Lasting Health Benefits

May 28, 2014 by JoAnna

While Pilates has increased in popularity over the years for increased flexibility, strength training, and even weight loss, not many people know how or when it was started.

We believe wholly in the benefits of Pilates, which is an exercise system designed to strengthen muscles, increase flexibility, and improve overall health. Therefore, we wanted to share a brief history of Pilates and the benefits it can have on your life!

Origin of Pilates

The concept and building blocks of Pilates as we know it today was developed by a German man named Joseph Pilates, born in 1883 with several illnesses including asthma and rheumatic fever. From an early age, Joseph Pilates dedicated himself to not only improving his physical health, but also increasing his mental strength. He believed strongly in the mental capacity to improve physical issues. This core belief is paramount in Pilates exercises where you are aware of each and every breath while focusing also on the alignment and strength of your spine, abdominal muscles, and overall torso area.

Joseph Pilates refined his system while stuck in Britain (due to World War I) by training other German soldiers with his methods. After the war, he published two books (in 1934, then 1945) on his new exercise regime and its mental and physical health benefits. Joseph Pilates taught several of his students his traditional methods so they would continue his work and promote Pilates to a more general audience. While it started small, Pilates eventually grew from just a few practitioners in the 20th Century to become a widely known fitness method alongside yoga for celebrities in the early years of the 21st Century. And it just keeps growing!

Benefits of Pilates

In the words of Joseph Pilates, “In ten sessions, you’ll feel the difference, in twenty you’ll see the difference, and in thirty you’ll have a new body.”

Pilates is unique for both fitness and rehab purposes because it focuses on whole muscle groups rather than individual muscles. By building flexibility, strength, and endurance all at the same time, Pilates works well for a wide range of people.

Athletes and dancers love Pilates for overall conditioning; prenatal and postnatal women can benefit from the noncompetitive nature of Pilates classes; seniors practicing Pilates can improve their flexibility and stability; and people at various stages of physical rehabilitation will benefit from Pilates.

Pilates can help your energy and posture while sitting at a desk, while enjoying your hobbies such as gardening, and even when participating in high impact sports. It truly is a universal system for improving your overall health!

Why We’re in Love with the Highlands Neighborhood in Denver

May 13, 2014 by JoAnna

The Highlands neighborhood in Denver is a fast-growing neighborhood of small restaurants, bars, and boutique stores just northwest of downtown Denver. The Highlands neighborhood has even been featured in Travel + Leisure Magazine and National Geographic Traveler!

Highlands Neighborhood History

Highlands is located just outside Downtown Denver in the area south of 38th Ave. and between I-25 and Federal Blvd. Founded in 1858, the Highlands area became home to many immigrants during its early years. Clues to the Highlands’ unique history can be found around the area, from Scottish and Spanish street names to the specific style of St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

The turn into the 21st Century brought significant changes, most notably through the “Denver Millenium Bridge and Platte River Bridge” construction connecting the Highlands more with Denver. The Highlands’ eclectic architecture is just one element that makes Highlands such a popular destination for young families, business professionals, and other city lovers.

Highlands Community Highlights

The thriving neighborhood even has its own art walk each month! Every first Friday of the month galleries and artist open their doors and display their work. Tennyson Street transforms into a bustling art fair offering and displaying painting, photography, and even Chinese scrolls and stage costumes.

Some of the upcoming summer events in the Highlands area are the Highlands Street Fair in June, the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival in July, and more. Check out other events in the Highlands on the Denver Post’s website here.

Local Eats Near Firehaus Pilates in the Highlands

Need a little caffeine boost before or after a workout? Around the corner from Firehaus Pilates in the Highlands is Black Eye Coffee, a unique coffee bar to relax in after a Pilates class.

If you’re looking for a full meal, just east on 38th and slightly north on Tennyson Street is Hops and Pie, a taproom with beers and artisan pizzas. We also recommend Sushi Hai south on Lowell Blvd. for some of Colorado’s best sushi. This sleek Japanese restaurant focuses on making sushi rolls with a modern twist.
