How to: Keep Your New Years Resolutions

December 8, 2014 by JoAnna

nyeresolutions-01

The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to set goals for self-improvement. The slate is wiped clean as the old year is passed and a new year is here for the taking. Traditionally, New Year’s Day is a holiday to reflect on the past and celebrate hope for the future. People make toasts to New Year’s resolutions with sparkling champagne amidst glittering lights. But when the hangover subsides the following morning, resolve quickly decreases and old habits prevail.

Don’t let another year pass without reaching your goals. These tips will help you to keep this year’s resolutions:

1. Don’t set a goal unless you are serious about it.

It is easy to make big New Year’s Eve resolutions while surrounded by liquor, and streamers, and friends. The problem with that is we make ourselves promises without fully considering the work it will take to get there. Failing at a resolution can be more discouraging than never having set one at all, so only make goals you are serious about conquering. Take the time to evaluate what changes you really want to make in life, and reflect on why you want to make those changes. Having solid reasoning behind your ambitions will give you a foundation on which to achieve them.

2. Choose resolutions that are achievable.

Setting a goal on January 1st to lose 100 pounds by Valentine’s Day is not realistic. Deciding to never again touch junk food or sweets, so long as you live, may not be achievable either. Save yourself the disappointment by setting goals you can actually attain, and don’t be afraid to mix small goals with large ones.

3. Focus on just a few changes at a time.

Too much change too fast can cause a person to crash. Write down every one of your goals for the upcoming year so that you won’t forget them. Prioritize your list, and select only 2-3 goals to work on at a time. Make sure the ones you select won’t fight each other.

4. Set out a step-by-step plan of attack.

One of most common New Year’s mistakes is setting a goal without having a plan of action. Deciding you want to do more Pilates this year is not enough. You will need to determine when, where, and how or the months will sneak by without any real changes. Think through a realistic plan of attack, and write it down on paper. Having a step-by-step outline in place will keep you on track for completion.

5. Keep your goals before your eyes.

Old habits die hard, and it is easy for distraction to make you lose focus. Fight this by writing down the 2-3 goals you have made your main focus and putting them somewhere you will frequently see them. Hang photos and quotes up as inspiration. Literally setting your eyes on the prize will keep you from getting lost in distraction.

6. Have a support system in place.

If you are attempting to make a big change, you may need someone there to cheer you on and hold you accountable. Ask a close friend or family member to call you out when you are cheating, or to be there when you need to vent. Change is not easy, and having someone you can count on to support your self-improvement is invaluable.

7. Don’t give up if you feel you are failing.

You’ve probably heard it before, but it is worth hearing again: The only way you can fail is if you quit. No matter how many times you falter, you can always try again. Don’t expect yourself to be perfect from day one. If accomplishing your resolutions were easy, there would be no need for resolution. When you slip, simply pick yourself right back up and fight again. Remember the reasons you set your goals, and make this the year that you achieve them!

Create Your Own Pilates Retreat to De-Stress During the Holiday Season

December 4, 2014 by JoAnna

Firehaus Pilates Instructor Clare Harriman in DenverHoliday shopping in the Denver area is building up towards its yearly holiday peak. With cold weather on the horizon and businesses scrambling to get their affair squared away before the holiday break, it seems almost impossible to find a few minutes in the day to take care of your personal wellbeing and fitness. At Firehaus Pilates, we are offering our clients and their loved ones a reprieve from seasonal stress and holly, jolly, jangled nerves.

This month we are inviting clients new and old to come in and design their own relaxing holiday retreat with us. This could look like back-to-back classes one weekend, a weekly private Pilates session, or an early morning group class every other day – whatever works best for you and allows you to make time in your schedule for good health and happiness. By scheduling a little time now before things get way overbooked in the next few weeks, you’ll be investing in a little peace of mind.

Let’s face it, we’d all like to spend time relaxing on a tropical beach or adventuring in some far flung vacation spot, but in the busy holiday season it’s impossible to find the time or the money for such an excursion. Just because you may not have the extra money for an island getaway or cruise doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to take some time away from it all. Centering yourself and getting in touch with a sense of inner calm and tranquility is always the right move and it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. Ask our Pilates instructors about the meditative nature of Pilates and they can help you build a practice that will let you access a private, relaxing mental sanctuary any time you need it.

Many people think back on the holidays with happy nostalgia that they never seem to recapture in their adult lives. Of course, this is because when we were kids we enjoyed all the trappings of the holidays without the responsibilities and obligations that come with them. We can’t go back to being children, but we can make room in our lives for a little peace. Planning a Pilates retreat for yourself or with a partner can be a great step in that direction that won’t break your holiday budget.

No matter how or where you spend your days leading up to the holidays we hope that you’ll take some time to relax, stretch, and remember that the season was made to be enjoyed, not just endured. Happy Holidays; we hope to see you in our Pilates studio real soon!

5 Reasons to Try Pilates Today

November 13, 2014 by JoAnna

Firehaus Pilates Denver COAt Firehaus Pilates in Denver, we could go on for hours about how Pilates can help you live a better, healthier life. However, if you are on the fence about whether or not to give this innovative exercise regime a try, here are five reasons to convince you to come into our Pilates studio and try Pilates today.

1. Pilates Improves Your Focus

Every minute of the day, innumerable items are fighting for your attention and can take their toll on your nerves: your job, your family, your social life, etc. Since you are reading this article online, consider the path you took to arrive here. Everywhere you look there are ads, articles, tweets, pins, and facebook posts; it’s enough to frazzle even the most disciplined mind.

Pilates exercises require constant attention to breathing and posture. These fundamental aspects of physical being are all too easy to overlook. By centering your attention on them and pushing out all distractions, Pilates exercises can renew your ability to focus your attention in the present moment. Our instructors at Firehaus Pilates can help you regain focus during fitness sessions and learn how to carry that mental rejuvenation into the rest of your life.

2. Pilates Helps You Prevent and Recover from Injuries

Joseph Pilates, the founder of the exercise practice, created his workout philosophy around a blend of Western and Eastern physical therapy practices. A genius in creating customized apparatuses to help with exercise, Joseph Pilates knew that one size certainly doesn’t fit all when it comes to recovering from an injury. As such, Pilates is all about creating customized workout routines that take into account an individual’s unique physiology and adjusting those routines over time to aid recovery.

Pilates is also helpful for preventing injuries. When we are young it is easy to bounce back after a bad fall, but as we get older calcification around the joints and general wear and tear begins to take a more noticeable toll on our ability to perform everyday tasks. Without regular exercise and core strengthening, even a minor physical activity can unexpectedly lead to a thrown out back, a fall, or worse. Improving balance, flexibility and strength can help prevent such injuries by increasing awareness of where your body is in space and how it is aligned. The sooner you begin a Pilates regime, the sooner you can ameliorate some of the risks of just being alive and active.

3. Stay Fit and Flexible with Pilates

We all want to maintain a certain level of physical fitness. Indeed, modern culture has a seemingly endless list of demands for how we should appear. Putting aside the tidal wave of nonsense in every fashion magazine, we all want and deserve to feel great in our own bodies. Pilates exercises were designed with health as a top priority. By adopting a regular Pilates workout program you’ll find your overall physical condition improving every month you keep it up. Cookie cutter workouts or diets may say they offer the same benefits, but then they only take one or two fairly arbitrary metrics like weight into account. As Pilates exercises are scalable to meet your ever improving levels of strength and flexibility, you’ll be able to monitor your progress and see real and positive results in weight loss, strength training, and overall health and wellness.

4. Get Off the Couch with Pilates

As we mentioned in a previous post, sitting down for too long is dangerous. From our desks at work to our couches at home most of us spend way too much time sitting and not nearly enough time moving around. Pilates is a great way to leave your chair behind and get moving.

Our bodies crave exercise, but seemingly every aspect of modern living is built to keep us stationary. Especially when winter weather hits, bad habits can keep us inert for far too long. Firehaus Pilates provides a clean, calm, non-competitive atmosphere where you can come to work on you and nothing else. There’s no time like the present to start establishing a healthier and more active lifestyle and it can begin right now!

5. Pilates Helps Condition the Whole Self

So much of what we do every day externalizes our awareness and makes us subject to our environment and obligations. It doesn’t have to be that way. Pilates lets us take control of our bodies and our minds by dedicating some time to conditioning ourselves rather than responding to outside stimulus. By narrowing our attention to the practice of becoming stronger, more flexible, and more focused, Pilates practitioners help themselves take control back from the outside world. It’s not asking too much of yourself or the world to dedicate some time every week to your personal improvement. Firehaus Pilates is here to help and our team of experienced instructors look forward to seeing you improve both mentally and physically.

Foam Rolling: The Best Kept Secret

November 6, 2014 by JoAnna

foamroller-01

It is no secret that we are believers in the power of the foam roller. But have we converted you yet?

WHY SHOULD YOU FOAM ROLL?

Foam rolling is basically at-home deep tissue massage therapy as it relaxes and stretches muscles. By doing so it helps with correcting postural imbalances, improving faulty movement patterns, taking pressure off joints, easing muscle soreness, and keeping muscles at their original length. Foam rolling is just as important as stretching to keep you exercising many more years without injuries.

HOW IT WORKS

Foam rolling is also called Self Myofascial Release (SMR). SMR targets muscle knots, or myofascial trigger points, that are points where the muscle contracted too much either from prolonged use of the same muscle or a sudden, too strenuous movement that caused the muscle fibers to spasm. This restricts the flow of nutrients and blood into that part of the muscle, which prohibits the proper function of the muscle.

GETTING STARTED

You can find a wide range of foam rollers in all kinds of shapes and sizes. The most common rollers are white or black cylinders between 1’ and 3’ long. The white roller is made from a softer material than the black one, which results in a milder massage. Newer versions of foam rollers have gridlines or a bumpy surface for a stronger massage. You can also find myofascial release balls which allow for a more targeted massage of areas needing deeper pressure such as the gluteus muscles, calves, or for reaching into hard-to-get-to places such as the front of the hip. You can also find hand held SMR tools, like The Stick or smaller versions of foam rollers like the Trigger Point Quadballer. Most of these tools cost between $15.00 to $40.00.

By rolling on the SMR tools with your bodyweight, you push blood and nutrients back into the muscle knots and help them relax and release.

FOAM ROLLING GUIDELINES

Start off by rolling for just a few minutes and spend extra time on painful spots. The first time you foam roll it might be quite painful but it gets better quickly. If you ever had a deep tissue massage or a sports massage you know that you might experience discomfort during the massage but you will feel so much better afterward.

Give yourself a couple of days after your first session to assess for bruises and give the muscles time to recover. Some tenderness afterward is normal but you should never feel pain once off the foam roller. You can roll prior, during and after a workout for as little as a couple of minutes or as long as an hour or more depending on your needs and the amount of muscles that need to be addressed.

STILL NOT CONVINCED YOU NEED TO FOAM ROLL?

Think of your body as a Ferrari that needs regular oil changes to maintain its great performance. Foam rolling is your body’s oil change. Daily activity is enough to create muscle knots that can throw your body off. Foam rolling is a very inexpensive way to keep injuries away.

WHERE TO BUY

Don’t worry, you don’t have to look far to find a good-quality foam roller.  We keep rollers, knot-outs, and other essential Pilates tools in studio for our clients to take advantage of both in class and at home.
